Window Box Planters
Who hasn’t been thrilled to see a window box full of Mother Nature’s brilliant flowers? After all, flowers “gladden the heart and lift the spirits”. Planning and preparing window flower boxes can give even the busiest person a sense of pride and accomplishment, rewarding small efforts with fragrant blooms and visual satisfaction. Window boxes can also brighten up a dreary corner or add colour and interest to a monotonous wall of apartment windows or balconies.
Window box planters can be more than mere decoration or “gardening therapy”, however. Planting flowers such as geraniums and marigolds helps discourage insects from flying into open windows, and window box greenery can contribute to improving air quality. Every little bit helps!
For as lovely as flowers may be, though, they are not the only candidates for garden window boxes. Consider the culinary window box, which offers the advantage of garden fresh herbs available right outside the kitchen window. Basil, thyme, rosemary, mint, oregano – most culinary herbs may be planted in small pots first, and then placed pot and all into the window box soil. This will keep the herbs contained so that the more virulent ones don’t overtake the window plant boxes. Remember to keep comestible garden window boxes at least 25 feet from automobile traffic to avoid contamination.
For those who cannot decide between edible and decorative window plant boxes, consider planting edible flowers, such as the nasturtium and pansy, in the same window box as culinary herbs. Keep the herbs in pots and plant the flowers right in the loose soil.
Happy window box plant gardening!
